Patience is a virtue!
Ok. Since we’re going home next month, we can’t wait to dine in Kenny Roger’s Roasters, Kamay Kainan, Aling Luring’s Sizzling sisig- SM Pamp food court, Chowking, Jollibee, Baliuag’s Lechong manok (sarsa pa lang ulam na!), Malolos’ special ensaymada, inipit.
We also missed Zhagu, and also the street foods such as fishballs, tukneneng (quail eggs), samalamig, and scramble ni manong!!!
Blame EJ for withdrawing hehehe.. Actually you freaked us out! From reaching the 50th subscriber to KFX’s dedication to American Idol ( we’re also watching it here kaso a week behind

E&C,
What, me, withdrawal pains?
Mish-i,
Cult? Oh, do you mean the emerging Pinoy Podcasts sub-culture? Maybe we can plan a cult party then? Don’t forget to invite Chica and missing-in-action JERIC(!!!). Haha.
That’s a thought - a Pinoy Podcasters & fans Manila party/EB. Sponsored by Titik Pilipino perhaps?
Am downloading this ep pa lang… still to listen in and be happy…

i miss fishballs near the AS Library (UP Diliman), and that place in old Balara where they serve free gravy and unlimited rice servings… i forgot the name. shish.
oh… and that dirty gotohan in front of MWSS. it’s the only place in UP that’s open at 2am.

Hi,
I took me a while to figure out the eating places that are gone now. I guess it would be Rasa Singapura at Kamuning and the Old Drug Store near the entrance at Balara and near UPIS. I am not quite sure if its gone now but there is Ramon Lee in Manila.
BTW
I was testing Gizmo Project the other day and entered ManongGuard call sign(?) and inadvertantly left a message. Sent another message but that does not seem to clear it up also. Anyway, sorry for snafu

I sure miss Smokey’s. Their pizza dog and footlong’s great. Yes, its full of preservatives but it still good. I haven’t found a good hotdog place here in Cali that can replace Smokey’s. I don’t miss Chowking or Jolibee that much since they have it here anyways. Although, I do miss Jollibee’s Jolly hotdog since they don’t have in their menu here.
And oh yeah, I miss the Dampa in Libis.. Good Garic Butter Shrimp.. yuuum…
February 22nd, 2006 at 1:27 pm
I miss…
the extinct: Bonanza (their sate and java rice and the mini golf) in EDSA, a restaurant (in the 70s) infront of ABS-CBN where they had great pulutan like sizzling tahong,
the near extinct: Ma Mon Luk (their siopao and mami - the original mami!), Swiss Inn in Paco (where they have veal brains and pork knuckles!)
still in operation (but I miss it because I’m based here in U.S.): El Cirkulo, Zucchini’s, Alba’s
Hope you can do a follow-up on this topic on the next podcast and discuss what your listeners missed most.

From Christian Marlo: Manong Guard, did you meet with Chika yet? Will you podcast?
MG: No. She hasn’t even contacted me on my cel. Dre and Obet claim she’s busy with a lot of family stuff but I think she just really doesn’t like me that much. hehehe.
Congratulations on your podilicious. I’ll be emailing the banner to you as soon as I can.
From Edwin and Cherry: …we can’t wait to dine in Kenny Roger’s Roasters, Kamay Kainan, Aling Luring’s Sizzling sisig- SM Pamp food court, Chowking, Jollibee, Baliuag’s Lechong manok (sarsa pa lang ulam na!), Malolos’ special ensaymada, inipit.
We also missed Zhagu, and also the street foods such as fishballs, tukneneng (quail eggs), samalamig, and scramble ni manong!!!
MG: I know most of the places you mentioned. If you’re looking for a sit down Baliwag Lechon Manok dinner, you can visit the Baliwag restaurant along E. Rodriguez avenue (before you hit Happy Sauna if you’re coming from Cubao — not that I’ve ever been there).
Zagu is pretty much a dead fad now. I still buy the occasional Quickly (much better alternative methinks) pearl/nata drink though. Tried scramble again recently… it’s not the same experience I remember from my childhood.
From balbonics: Wow Manong, congrats on the book!
MG: Thanks for noticing. Hehehe. You are probably the only person who commented on that.
From adel: i miss fishballs near the AS Library (UP Diliman), and that place in old Balara where they serve free gravy and unlimited rice servings… i forgot the name. shish.
oh… and that dirty gotohan in front of MWSS. it’s the only place in UP that’s open at 2am.
MG: That place with unlimited rice is called Mang Jimmy’s, but they don’t serve free rice anymore, which is pretty sad. They still make the best tapa mix though. That gotohan is also probably not around anymore since the knocked down all “The Wall” shops from years back.
from Juned: I took me a while to figure out the eating places that are gone now. I guess it would be Rasa Singapura at Kamuning and the Old Drug Store near the entrance at Balara and near UPIS. I am not quite sure if its gone now but there is Ramon Lee in Manila.
MG: Rasa Singapura I think is still there. But the one I remember is simply called Singapura, at least by the locals. “Rasa” on the other hand is a Singaporean themed restaurant at the foot of the Araneta Col. Could it be that it’s the same restaurant?
From Obi: I sure miss Smokey’s.
Good Garic Butter Shrimp.. yuuum…
MG: Smokey’s is still very much around though not as popular as they were during the 80’s. They still make pizza dogs and wraparound dogs and whatever else. I personally like Sabrett dogs and those, I’m sure, you can find in the States. I’ve been to a Jollibee in the west coast once, and to the now defunct Tito Rey’s … haven’t seen a chowking there though.
The Dampa sa Libis is probably the worst dampa around. It fails both in taste and in cleanliness (I mean it’s bad even for a dampa). A better alternative within the area is the Dampa along Julia Vargas.
From vFusion: the extinct: Bonanza (their sate and java rice and the mini golf) in EDSA, a restaurant (in the 70s) infront of ABS-CBN where they had great pulutan like sizzling tahong,
the near extinct: Ma Mon Luk (their siopao and mami - the original mami!), Swiss Inn in Paco (where they have veal brains and pork knuckles!)
still in operation (but I miss it because I’m based here in U.S.): El Cirkulo, Zucchini’s, Alba’s
MG: I’ve never been to Bonanza nor the Swiss Inn. Other than that, those are good eating places you mentioned. Ma Mon Luk is still in Quezon Avenue somewhere across the Sto. Domingo Church block. Oh, and I love Zucchini’s.

I remember leaving a congratulatory comment for MG, but can’t find it. Might have been dreaming. I’ve even been to a bookstore to look for the book, just for a peek. XD
Try the dampa (Seaside Paluto) along Macapagal Avenue, between Blue Wave and that Manila Doctors school.
February 27th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
I remember eating (roast calf?) at Bonanza with the parents a couple of times in the 80s.
Some places I remember are Orange Julius (hotdogs), The Yum Yum Tree, Coney Island (ice cream parlor), Cindy’s (never been there, but I heard it was “the place to be”), Esperanza’s (is now Annabell’s), Savory (chicken).
Sukhothai and Piadina at SM Megamall closed shop due to rent increase.

My sister-in-law told me about Sabrett. I have to try that when I go for a visit. Same goes with Something Fishy at Eastwood. Love Smokey’s. I saw one little kiosk at the NAIA airport a few years back. And my friend told me they opened one at the food court in the new Medical City in Pasig? (What the..?). There’s a lot Chowking opening up here. the newest one is at Union City, inside Seafood City Supermarket. My fave Jolibee food here’s of-course, Chicken Joy and Aloha Burger. That’s true about the Dampa in Libis. The cleanliness issue is one thing I noticed there. I have to try the on Julia Vargas when I go visit. (Whenever that is).
Oh yeah, one more thing that I really miss and we discuseed this in our podcast, which is now gone: Chew Chew Junction in Ali Mall, Cubao.. Its that train car converted to a spaghetti restaurant.. Good spaghetti delivered to your table by a toy train..
