Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! I’ll be listening to this podcast this long weekend. :)

  2. Edwin & Cherry Says:

Happy thanksgiving to everyone!!! We’re gonna watch the Goblet of Fire on the 26th Nov 05… High hopes!

  3. JayDJ Says:

Some unproudly Jeepney habits I detest:

    1. they don’t use headlights at night (I learned it was to save on battery usage)
    2. they will stop anywhere to load/unload passengers (even if the passenger will eventually get off in the middle of the highway (which then you’d have to swerve to avoid both jeepney and passengers who just got down - even more difficult)
    3. I hate their loud-sounding horns which make you think a ship is passing you rather than a jeep
    4. if you’re driving a car, stuck in traffic and trying to change lanes, they will dare and challenge you to get past them. I figure they have this notion that a jeep’s dent is nowhere near the value of a car’s dent… so they assume you won’t dare try to change lanes cause chances are they’d ignore you and won’t let you cut in.

For U-turns, I only wish that the exact middle of the jeep could be flexible (like a harmonica) so they could turn without taking up the entire u-turn space.

About the driver seated diagonally, it’s because the jeeps seat wasn’t designed for ergnomics. It’s basically a bench with a little padding placed inside the jeep. If you try to sit in the driver’s seat, you’d be cramped and unable to drive comfortably. In addition, it’s also easier for the driver to get the passenger’s fare since he’s practically in the middle of the jeepney’s front.

One proud thing, which is actually ingenuios, is their CDplayers.
Jeepneys have managed to use those obsolete and used 2x-24x speed CD-ROMS and hook them up their car stereos/sound system converting the CD-ROM drive into an instant CD player. I was even surprised to see jeeps have CD players with brands such as Asus, LiteOn, SoundBlaster,LG and other popular CDROM brands. Cool !
Anyone can get a used low-speed CDROM for P50. - P250. so it’s much more cheaper than buying an actual CD player/discman.

They choose those CD-ROM drives with extra controls on the panel such as play, next, previous and volume control since they can’t control it via software.

The unproudly counterpart to this great use for recycling old hardware is that you will never find any jeep playing an original CD. With what a jeepney driver earns, you know why. Still it isn’t a reason to buy and use pirated audio CDs.

    Hey ! I won something ! Thanks ! :) Jhamie congrats din ! :)

No comment ako on Harry Potter. I may be one of the very few people who isn’t into both the book and the movie.

  4. sylver Says:

on jeepney drivers: some of them don’t return the spare change especially if it’s just 25 - 50 cents. but if you gave a wrong amount, damn you will hear things like “ang mahal mahal na ng krudo kulang pa binabayad ninyo, or $@&*! !!!.

  5. Edwin & Cherry Says:

    Ok here’s our unproudly filipino point of view;
If you’re into chatrooms like yahoo’s esp. filipino servers, noticed how they are so proud to sing ala videoke kings and queens, which has a line up of the chatters who would like to sing and show off their out-of-tune voices, it really grinds my gears! Such an abuse of technology!

  6. ManongGuard Says:

Any of you wanna share your opinion regarding “My Sassy Girl”?

  7. jhamie Says:

Same here. I also thought that “My Sassy Girl” was the usual love story, you know, there’s love triangle then someone eventually dies in a horrible accident before the movie ends. I only watched it when most of my friends recommended it (w/c is an indication that it’s good because my friends are hard to please). Good thing I listened. You should also watch “Windstruck.” It’s a sort of prequel, witty too.

I knew it! The first time I saw the full trailer for Chronicles of Narnia, it had a Lord of the Rings feel to it. The musical score gave me goosebumps. Same thing with The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Punyemas, trailer pa lang kinilabutan na ko, and it takes a lot to scare me.

  8. E.J. Says:

My Sassy Girl has been way over-rated from the start. As expected, the uncultured, uneducated hoi polloi have made (too) much ado about nothing.

  9. ManongGuard Says:

    EJ,

While I would be joining you in the barracks hatching some plot or another to end the infestation of the uncultured in our society. I would have to disagree on this point.

One thing refreshing about the movie is that it makes no claims of being cerebral. Even the UFO gimicks and shit are retarded really, but I am coming from an entertainment value angle. It is sort of like “Evil Dead” to me. I lost braincells sitting through both movies but was definitely thoroughly entertained.

    Jay

  10. E.J. Says:

Don’t get me wrong ha. The movie does have its moments, in a very superficial way. At most, it will be recognized as one of the more popular films of its genre. Don’t expect it at any international film fests though. A cheesy/kilig popcorn movie at best.

  11. E.J. Says:

Okay, looks like we have simultaneous posting here. He he.

Spekking of (nahawa na sa P.I. gang!) brain cell loss from a movie, I am reminded of the time I watched Kung Pao. I guess it was masochistic fun for me, watching it. Call it one of my babaw-fun movies. Haha. It was funny at first, then the humor quickly got over-used/stale and the movie felt like it was taking forever to end. I swear I could feel my brain oozing out of my ears by the time it did. Wheee!

  12. ManongGuard Says:

Yeah… Kung Pao had it’s momments… but I also hated the repetitive shit. Like that dead guy who kept getting back up… and that girl who strips and then magically puts her clothes back on. And what’s with that singing tongue.

    High points for me were:

    1. Cow Fight
    2. Students beating up the chosen one with sticks

  13. jhamie Says:

    “uncultured, uneducated hoi polloi”

    Pfft..

  14. JayDJ Says:

Kawawa naman si Kid Flash X… walang gustong magcomment or react on Harry Potter. Buti pa si Sassy Girl, may attention.

Hi to Kid Flash X ! Better luck next episode :)

  15. Jolo Says:

Did you know that the actual story behind “My Sassy Girl” came from a korean blog.

  16. Diong Says:

Just watched Harry Potter… they did an excellent job making the movie. I best way really to enjoy these movies is when you read the books. This movie is the best of the four movies so far…

  17. E.J. Says:

I hate all PUV drivers with a vengeance. From the pedicab pedal-pushers, to stupidass taxi and jeepney driver ignoramuses, to the bus drivers from hell on EDSA.

I even had a bumper sticker custom-made that has “Public Utility Vehicles stay on Yellow (PUV) lane! —>” on it - in rebuttal to the MMDA’s bus stickers that say, “Private vehicles keep off yellow PUV lane

  18. E.J. Says:

BTW, I’ve been told that jeepneys keep their headlights off at night so that potential commuters can easily read the route sign (karatula) on the jeep’s windshield (without getting blinded by the glare).

  19. Local Apple Distributor promotes Philippine Podcasting -- Pinoy Tech Blog - The Philippines’ Premier Technology Blog Says:

[…] Anyway, still good news that the industry is supporting podcasting in the Philippines. Microwarehouse might have missed an article by Inq7 about pinoy podcasters last October 4. There’s also the vidcast, The Michael Josh Show, which is on its 14th episode; the one by Putanginamo.com with 16 episodes, Pinoy Podcast, and another one at live@usa.ph which I already lost count. […]

  20. ManongGuard Says:

Wow! We get mentioned. Hope more listeners get in on it.

  21. Mishi Says:

This is my first time posting here. I’ve listened to a few of your podcasts and am currently subscribed. I haven’t listened to this particular podcast yet though it caught my eye because My Sassy Girl is one of my favorite movies. My BF also loves this movie, actually, he loves it more than I do XP Of course it’s your typical love story but I’ve hardly seen anything like this in Filipino cinema. But that’s probably because of the difference in culture. In any case, the movie is supposedly based on a true story. At around the end of the movie, they mentioned how the lead actor wrote a blog about his stories and how it eventually became a movie. That is “My Sassy Girl.”

Anyways, don’t wanna drag this out.

I’ve enjoyed listening to your podcasts. I’ve always wondered why it wa mentioned a few times on your show how the podcast is running way too long. I wouldn’t mind listening to you guys for an hour. Fa’reals! XP

    Good luck!

  22. Edwin & Cherry Says:

You are most welcome to the live gang Mishi!!!! Keep on posting!!!

  23. Dogan Says:

Manong guard, despite seeing you in the office almost everyday, this is the first time I managed to listen to your ever-famous podcast.

LTFRB is not issuing new jeepney franchises by the way. Metro Manila is a bit too saturated already. So the Saraos and Amantes would not probably be producing more u-turn incompatible jeepneys anymore.

  24. adel Says:

Ah… My Sassy Girl… I so love this movie. Jun Ji-Hyun is so gorgeous. Tagalog dub is a bit corny na. I’ve seen it kasi last year pa, with the English subtitle, and I think I’ve seen it 5 times na.

Everytime I watch it, I discover something new or haven’t noticed before. For instance, during my second viewing, that’s when I first saw that UFO flying on the background on that scene where the Sassy Girl (she has no name in the original Korean version) met the old man from the future.

Manong Guard, although mas maganda pa rin yung Sassy Girl, I think it’s worth to watch “Windstruck” na rin, while you’re in the hype. It’s from the same director, and you’ll enjoy the last scene… very much related sa Sassy Girl. Marami ring cameos from the Sassy Girl cast. hehehe…

  25. Manong Guard Says:

    Miahi,

Welcome to the Live Gang! Hope you keep posting.

    Dogan,

Thanks for listening. You get mentioned a lot on the podcast so might as well listen to the slander, right? Hehehe.

    Adel,

I knew it. You are a Koreanovella lover… I, on the other hand, am not as exclusive. Hehe.

    Jay

  26. E.J. Says:

Not as MG/Jay puts it, a “Koreanovella lover”, but I have a VCD of My Sassy Girl (in Korean w/ English subtitles) and a DVD of Windstruck (also in Korean, which I’ve had for almost a year, but haven’t watched yet).

  27. Obet Says:

Another good Korean movie is Old Boy.

  28. Anne Says:

MG I can’t believe you fell asleep during Harry Potter 3?!! That was the best HP movie (so far - haven’t seen the 4th one yet). Alfonso Cuaron did such a great job with the darker look of it that it really puts the first 2 by Chris Columbus to shame. I don’t think I’ve watched either of those a 2nd time.

Kid Flash, that was an interesting factoid about the WETA Workshop being responsible for the Chronicles of Narnia. I hadn’t heard that before. After the LOTR I have great respect for their craft.

  29. Manong Guard Says:

    Anne,

I’m like that. I fall asleep when I watch movies like HP3. I did like the Werewolf character.

    Jay

  30. Mishi Says:

    Obet,

I’ve been wanting to watch Old Boy but I heard it was gory, is that true?

    E.J.,

Windstruck was good but I think My Sassy Girl was better. Another romantic/comedy Korean movie is The Classic - same director of MSG. And there’s Too Beautiful To Lie which is really funny. Hmm, I also recommend Please Teach Me English. Obviously, I watch a LOT of Korean movies and Japanese ones, too.

  31. E.J. Says:

Thanks for the suggestments, Mish. I still haven’t gotten around to finally watching my copy of Windstruck.

  32. Manong Guard Says:

I have No Way Out (I think that is the title) but that is far from a Korean romantic comedy. Also, has anyone ever seen “Ichi the Killer”? I have yet to find someone else who appreciates the humor of that movie.

  33. balbonics Says:

I liked My Sassy Girl, it was funny. Unfortunately it was built up so much before I saw it that I over-expected and ended up being a little disappointed. But had I “discovered” that film on my own, sans reviews and everything, I’d probably have been proud of myself.

Harry Potter was great, though. Can’t complain. Maybe my memory is too short, but whatever divergence from the book some people might complain about is negligible. Kewl!

  34. Mishi Says:

    Manong,

I heard a lot about Ichi the Killer. My BF’s cousin recommended it to me but I know how sadistic that film is. I just don’t have the guts to watch that movie. But my BF’s cousin absolutely loves that movie. There’s no way I’m watching it.

    E.J.,

You’re welcome. The lead actor in Windstruck is the that guy from Volcano High and Please Teach Me English. He’s purty funny. Hope you get the chance to watch Windstruck. Let us know your opinion once you do.

  35. Manong Guard Says:

Mishi…. would your BF’s cousin’s name be Karlo?

  36. Mishi Says:

Yes! O.O How did you know that? You didn’t just pick a name out of thin air, did you?

  37. Manong Guard Says:

This Karlo has a girlfriend who is the daughter of a famous folk singer. I have psychic powers Mishi.

  38. Mishi Says:

Seriously Manong Guard! Wait, I don’t know about the GF. That is if she’s is the daughter of a famous folk singer…. you’re pulling my leg, aren’t you! XP That was creepy. But seriously!! Is it the same Carlo? Oh hey, he spells it with a C. What’s the GF’s name?

    It’s a small world after all… it’s a small world….

    X.x

  39. Manong Guard Says:

Okay… I’m seeing something biblical…. two pillars… and a man trying to push them apart. Does that make sense?

  40. Mishi Says:

    Hahahaha! Samson!

But stop distracting me. Wait, was that suppose to make sense? Am I suppose to be reading between the lines or something…. o.O

    All hail ‘Nonguardamus.

  41. Manong Guard Says:

    I dunno… all I am saying is that I sense these things. I see a man with a goatee… and something like a black box or a turntable… and a sign that says… EM: Electronica…. something… Manila?

  42. Mishi Says:

Hmm… it’d be quite an adventure if I can go ala “being john malkovich” on you… or that could be a bad idea as well XP

  43. Manong Guard Says:

Hahaha… enter my mind? That would be like dropping acid. Some interesting things in there and some scary ones too. Mostly pictures of naked animals.
